The GALBALLY Herd of Pedigree Limousins was established by myself Trevor Masterson and my father Billy with the purchase of 2 maiden heifers at the Irish Limousin Cattle Society Sale in Naas in April 1994.What began as a hobby back in 1994, when our first pair of pedigree heifers were purchased has since grown to become our main farming enterprise.

The herd has since expanded to its present level of almost 60 pedigree-breeding females, with purchases along the way from the Millknock, Ballydaniel, Ballymoney and Luttrellstown herds.

Alongside our Limousin herd, we also keep a small pedigree Charolais herd of 8 cows and some crossbreds from E.T. work

There had always been a tradition of cattle breeding here on the farm, having for a large number of years been heavily involved in "Commercial Fatstock Showing".

The aim of our breeding policy is to produce heavily muscled bulls with excellent temperament that are capable of achieving high growth rates alongside females with both size and quality.

In the last few years it has been the herd policy to retain the best of the heifer calves in the herd and to strictly cull any cow irrespective of age whose progeny have been disappointing.

This together with a high usage of A.I., we feel are the only way to keep up with the genetic advances that have been witnessed within the breed during the past decade. This strong usage of both French and British A.I. has formed the nucleus of some strong breeding lines within the herd.

The fruits of our endeavours were reaped this summer when the Galbally herd not only won the Prestigious Herds Competition for the second year (2006 and 2007) in a row but also won all 3 of the special awards:

  • Best Young Male born in 2006
  • Best Young female born in 2006
  • Best Overall Group of Calves

Considerable emphasis in our development has been laid upon docility with several females culled in the early stages to eradicate the problem.

To assist our potential purchasers full B.L.U.P. records are available on all our cattle.

The South East Limousin Club held a Field evening/ herd visit on Sat.15th July 2006.

The sun shone overhead and there was an excellent turnout of over 100 keen Limousin supporters.

Breeders travelled from as far away as Kerry and Cavan to view the herd.

A stock-juding competition was also held with sections for both adults and juniors.
